Jaundice is when the eyes and skin look yellow. It is not a disease, but a sign that the liver is not working normally. In healthy people, the liver removes the yellow pigment from the body. When the liver is stressed or affected, this pigment builds up and the yellow colour becomes visible.
In children, jaundice commonly occurs due to hepatitis A or hepatitis E, and it usually starts improving within a day or two. But if the yellow colour continues for more than three days, it is important to see a doctor to check for other causes. Many different conditions can lead to jaundice in children, and even newborn babies can develop it for various reasons.
